Real Info Edit
Scale mail is a form of armor used only in the early middle ages. Since Barding armor was available to only the richest of warriors, scale barding armor was extremely rare since most of the civilizations at the time had neither the wealth nor the organization to produce it. How useful barding armor actually was is debatable: although it did provide some protection from blows, it restricted the vision of the horses, and (more importantly) horses may still be rendered uncontrollable after suffering concussive damage. Barding armor was thus mostly used as a sign of prestige and wealth.
Barding was armor placed on horses. Scale barding armor was made of layers of rounded metal scales that overlapped each other in a cascade. This partially protected the horse from both arrows and hand weapons. A blow against the armor was partially deflected, and the layers of scales absorbed much of the energy of the blow.
